Les Marchés de Noël

The French Christmas markets are the most magical holiday marchés (markets). With their glowing lights, festive sounds, local foods, and beautiful historic backdrops, these markets create an ambiance that captures the essence of Christmas.

While I haven’t yet had the chance to experience the magic of a French Christmas market (yet!), it’s certainly on my dream travel list. Just imagining the sights, sounds, and scents of the season in the heart of France fills me with holiday cheer! So today, I’m taking you with me on a virtual tour…

Our first stop is in Alsace, a northeastern region of France, on the border of Germany and Switzerland. Two of the most famous markets are located here, in Strasbourg and Colmar.

Strasbourg – Christkindelsmärik

The Christkindelsmärik is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, held annually in Strasbourg since 1570. Known as the "Capital of Christmas," Strasbourg’s market boasts over 300 stalls, selling everything from bredele (Alsatian Christmas cookies) to handcrafted ornaments. The “fairytale” atmosphere is magical, with a giant Christmas tree at the center of the market.

Colmar – La Magie de Noël

Colmar’s market is smaller but equally mesmerizing, featuring half-timbered houses dressed in festive lights throughout six separate mini villages. Visitors can explore the themed sections, sampling mulled wine and local fare.

In la Petite Venise, children can ride on horses and post letters in Santa's Giant Letter Box. The Koïfhus is an indoor craft market held in a medieval building where visitors can discover intricate glass ornaments, toys, pottery, and other local artisan creations. The elegant Eglise des Dominicains (Dominican Church) with its spectacular 14th-century stained glass windows lights up at night, illuminating the surrounding square.

Marché de Noël

You can also find multiple markets in the city of Paris! Arguably, the most famous one is the Marché de Noël des Tuileries, located right by the Louvre. Here, visitors can find a variety of seasonal delights along with a large number of Christmas-themed amusement rides and games, all amidst the stunning Parisian scenery.

Have you ever had the chance to attend these markets in person? If so, which one was your favorite?
