This late 19th century hand-thrown stoneware olive oil jug or cruche has a beautiful greige (grey / beige) salt glazed patina, 2 side handles and unique markings consistent with its age and use.
Once used in rural French homes to store and transport olive oil, this versatile vessel now makes a beautiful decorative accent while telling a story of turn-of-the-century Provençal life. These rare wicker-encased demijohn bottles were made with old-world French weaving methods, offering unique patinas. Each green glass demijohn bottle is wrapped in a wicker casing with rattan and grapevine details. Wicker-encased wine bottles were a long-time European tradition for protection against breakage and spoiling.
