From garden weddings to graduation celebrations, pool parties to backyard barbecues, outdoor hosting is going to be popular this summer as we reunite with family and friends!

It’s the perfect time of year to spruce up your outdoor plant décor, so we’ve put together a video of our Fleurette Mel designing the plantings in Sandra’s window boxes.

Learn how to plant a mixed garden in your favorite container with this step-by-step guide and video demonstration.

To recreate a similar planter mix at home, follow this plant recipe:

Ingredients

• Pansies

• Violas

• Icicles - licorice plant

• Flowering vinca

• A mix of old and new soil
  

Steps

• If you have leftover soil in a container from last season, create a mix with half new soil to fill your planter. The compost from the old roots will serve as food for your new plants!

• Add new fresh soil to the top of the planter.

• Select the plants that you love, placing them while still in their pots onto the top of the planter. This will help to plan and try different designs before you start planting.

• When taking the plant out of the plastic container, pull the roots apart from the spiral shape of the original container. This will promote them to grow within the new container.

• Place your plant in a hole big enough to accommodate the root system.

• Cover the roots with soil firmly enough to support the plant. Do not compact soil.

• As you plant your original design, don’t hesitate to modify things as you go, depending on height, color and space.

• Adding branches such as pussy willow or curly willow will add height and a fun contrasting texture to your planter.

• Water immediately with clear water. Then, approximately every 2 weeks, add fertilizer when watering.
