Antique stoneware crock with the brand name “La Ménagère” written in blue and a milky white glazed patina. The name ménagère, which translates to “housewife,” refers to a canteen that holds cutlery. These heavy stoneware jars were once used for storing pate and conserve. Now they make a great soap dish or ring dish in any farmhouse style kitchen or bath. Note: initial photo is for example only. This late 19th century hand-thrown stoneware olive oil jug or cruche has a beautiful greige (grey / beige) salt glazed patina, 2 side handles and unique markings consistent with its age and use.
Once used in rural French homes to store and transport olive oil, this versatile vessel now makes a beautiful decorative accent while telling a story of turn-of-the-century Provençal life.
